Welcome to the Music Business You're F**ked
Produced by Martin Atkins and Curse Mackey
@ Underground Inc. Offices / Chicago / USA
Sept. 10-11th, 2005

TheRecordIndustry.com is proud to announce their participation in the Underground Music Seminar, presented by Martin Atkins (Invisible Records, PiL, NIN, Pigface) & Curse Mackey (Pigface, Thrill Kill Kult).

The Underground Music Seminar is an informational symposium that is designed to benefit you through personal interaction with the producers and guest speakers. These are closed door discussions with information and focus designed exclusively for the benefit of those in attendance. We want to know...what do you want to know about the music business?

Find out if your dream is a nightmare in waiting.

Hear some stories that you won't forget. Learn some lessons that no one else in the business will tell ever take the time to teach you. These are closed door meetings with limited spots available.

This is not a candy-coated seminar to prepare you to schooze for a non-existent sound design job or to learn to mix a grammy nominated hip-hop single. This is about survival in the real world business of sex, drugs and rock n' roll. This is the truth. You will invest differently after this experience - or you might run for your f#ckin' life. If you do choose to continue, at least you'll know some of what you are in for.

Martin Atkins:
Invisible Records, Underground Inc.
Performer, Producer, Label Owner, Music Business Entrepreneur

"It's still tough for me. I joined Public Image Limited in 1979, toured the world, played on live television in Europe and on American Bandstand in the States, met Dick Clark, after 5 albums with PiL joined and managed Killing Joke, spent some time with Ministry documented in In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up, worked with Nine Inch Nails, (I'm in the Head Like a Hole video and worked on the Broken CD), started the bands Pigface, Murder Inc, and The Damage Manual, and now have an 18 year old label, Invisible Records and Underground Inc. distribution with over 250 releases, my own recording studio, screen printing business, and hopefully a state of mind that now has me only strive to achieve the do-ably-impossible. Into this mix, I see a constant barrage of lies and bullsh*t. It's preposterous to me to see late night TV ads to become a radio DJ, a record producer, or TV personality. The traditional paths to obtain these jobs do not exist anymore and if you've read this far, that's already more than 399 dollars worth of insight...

Arm yourself with the knowledge to rise above the shit and set yourself apart from the hordes of people with the same dreams.During my second set of teaching classes at Columbia College (The Business of Touring), as a member of the part-time faculty, I was allowed to bring in people with experience to talk to the class. Having watched Curse Mackey with his bands Evil Mothers and Grim Faeries, go on to produce the Woodstock Tattoo and Body Arts Festival, he seemed a natural to inform my class about what it takes to do that. Not hanging out with cool tattooists, (although I'm sure that's part of it), but the horrors, rigors, and discipline of working with traffic flow architects, to assuage the fears of the mayor of Woodstock, the police chief and growing army of skeptics...It wasn't until I sat at the back of the class and listened to Curse discuss his evolution as a music business entrepreneur, from bar back to DJ, from unsigned band guy to playing live in Europe, to tour managing while playing in Thrill Kill Kult and Pigface, promoting concerts and club events on up to massive cultural festival...that it struck me just how totally, potentially f*cked everyone is attempting to do anything in this business. And that's when the idea for this seminar was born."

Curse Mackey:
Co-Founder of Seminar, Performer, Producer, DJ, Promoter, Tour Manager

"I have experienced the highs, the lows, and the way below that of the entertainment biz. I have accomplished my dream of taking my band around the world only to come home, well, homeless, with no job, no girlfriend, no car, no cash.

I have produced events that have earned me thousands of dollars in a night and I have lost it all the next night on another event. I have created festivals and music that has received world wide recognition and to this day I wonder what the f*ck is going to happen next. How am I going to keep it all together? How am I going to handle the deal of the day? It's just the way this business operates.

There are no sure bets, promises are broken more than kept, and the door of opportunity is sometimes nothing but a broken window that one has to crawl through in order to "get in". But who is going to show you that window? I love what I do. I am extremely fortunate to be where I am at. Everything I have learned about the music business I have learned from face to face experience.

This is not a candy-coated seminar to prepare you to schmooze LucasFilm for a non-existent sound design job or to learn to mix a grammy nominated hip-hop single. This is about survival in the real world business of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll. This is the truth. You will invest your time and money differently after this experience - or you might run for your f*ckin' life. If you do choose to continue, at least you'll know what's in store."
